Optimo
Local-first media optimizer for images and video — batch up to 20,000 files, zero uploads, hardware-accelerated.
Why we built this.
Image and video optimization is one of those chores every web team does dozens of times a week — drag a 9 MB hero photo into a web tool, lose your work when the tab closes, repeat for the next twelve files. The browser tools are fine until you've got a folder of 200 product shots or a client asking you to compress a marketing video, and the upload-then-download relay becomes the bottleneck. The privacy story is worse: every file goes through someone else's server first.
Quick facts.
- 20,000
- files per batch
- 93%
- size reduction on demo
- Zero
- uploads required
Built Optimo as a desktop app so the files never leave the machine. Electron for the shell, Sharp for image work, bundled FFmpeg for video with hardware-accelerated codecs where the OS supports them (NVENC on NVIDIA, VideoToolbox on macOS, VAAPI on Linux). Queue up to 20,000 files at a time, hit one button, watch a live ETA tick down. EXIF and GPS metadata get stripped on the way out — the kind of detail you'd forget to do manually on every export. Zero uploads, no accounts, no tiers, no telemetry; the binary ships free.
What we learned.
Pulled a 9.4 MB image down to 647 KB — a 93% reduction — with no quality you'd notice losing.
Optimo turned 'compress these files' from a thirty-minute web-tool relay into a thirty-second drag-and-drop. The honest test: would we install it on our own machine and use it for client work? We do, every week.
Overview.
Optimo is a desktop app that compresses and converts image and video files entirely on the user's machine. Batch process up to 20,000 files at a time across every common format (PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, GIF, BMP, ICO, SVG; H.264, H.265, VP8, VP9, AV1), hit target file sizes with automatic quality adjustment, and lean on hardware encoders (NVENC, VideoToolbox, VAAPI) where the OS supports them. EXIF and GPS metadata get stripped automatically. No accounts, no tiers, no upload, no telemetry.
